Why do some opossums have really pointy faces and others have rounder faces?
I live in a neighborhood in ATL and there’s an opossum living in my yard. He’s very large (12-15lbs; 20-25 inches w/o tail), with a thick, luxurious coat, white face (no eye rings), and pink ears. He also has very long teeth. Unlike other opossums I’ve seen, his face is very round – he looks more like a mouse. He also looks clean and “healthy” instead of scraggly – I attribute this to neighborhood living! So with the face shape – is this a certain type of possum or just a normal variation? Or is the poor thing obese?
Well, better health (even obesity if it’s that big) can be attributed to this somewhat (long winter fur will not be matted and cheeks underneath the eyes will be kind of puffy from fat). Other than that though I have seen opossum such as you’ve described. Out of the 100-200 opossum treated while I was there, we had maybe two with surprisingly blunt noses come in/grow up at the rehab. There were some with shorter noses than others, but these stood out, all I can imagine is that it’s an uncommon recessive gene. They are certainly not of another species or subspecies, and it is not common for any locale (so natural selection isn’t choosing for shorter noses anywhere I know of yet).
